MADISON, NJ - The New Jersey Jazz Society has announced the schedule for sanofi-aventis Jazzfest 2008. One of the longest running straight ahead jazz festivals in the Northeast, Jazzfest will bring together more than 75 musicians and will be held on the campus of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey starting Friday evening, June 6 and running through Sunday, June 8, with an afterglow concert on Monday, June 9.
On Friday night, the New Jersey Jazz Society kicks off Jazzfest 2008 with a free outdoor concert featuring the best high school jazz bands in the state. Beginning at 7:00 PM, the winning bands from this spring's IAJE high school band competition will take the stage for an evening of swinging jazz from youngsters whose talent belies their ages!
Over the weekend, the music begins at noon each day and runs nonstop in three venues until 6:00 pm. The centerpiece for the festival will be the acoustically acclaimed Dorothy Young Center on the campus of Drew University. Shows will be outside under the large jazz tent and in two concert halls in the air conditioned arts center.
On Saturday, the featured artists will include:
* The Bucky Pizzarelli, Nicki Parrott and Rossano Sportiello Trio * Ed Metz & the Bob Crosby Bobcats * The James Dean Big Band * Cynthia Sayer & Sparks Fly * Tony DeSare Trio * Jerry Vezza Trio with Frank Noviello
On Sunday, the featured artists will be:
* Earl May Tribute Band featuring Larry Ham, Benny Powell, Bob Crenshaw, Eddie Locke and Dave Glasser. * Eric Comstock Trio * Swingadelic * Jazz Lobsters Big Band * Carrie Jackson & Her Swinging All-Stars * The Joe Temperley Quintet
Local residents will be treated to an afterglow concert on Monday evening when NJJS and the Wyeth Jazz Showcase present Dan Levinson and the International Reed Summit at the Bickford Theatre in the Morris Museum on Columbia Turnpike in Morristown. Tickets for the 8:00 PM concert are only $13.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door and may be ordered by calling the Bickford Theatre Box Office at 973-971-3706.
Drew University has contracted with a new food vendor to provide full-service food during Jazzfest weekend, including a real southern barbecue. There will be other vendors in attendance with several tables featuring rare and hard-to-find jazz CDs, apparel, jazz magazines and many other browsing opportunities.
All of the Jazzfest events have been made possible by the generous support of corporations and local organizations, including sanofi-aventis, PNC Bank, Drew University, Toyota of Morristown, WBGO Jazz88FM, the Star-Ledger, RexCorp, JazzMobile, Wyeth and JazzTimes Magazine. The Hyatt Morristown located on the Green in Morristown is the official festival hotel and offers special discount room rates for attendees. The hotel will also host a New Orleans style buffet dinner on Saturday, June 7. Hotel reservations may be obtained by calling 800-233-1234.
The New Jersey Jazz Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the performance, promotion and preservation of jazz. Through concerts, outreach programs in schools, hospitals and senior centers, as well as scholarships for young musicians, the Society is devoted to making jazz an integral part of New Jersey's cultural life.
Jazzfest tickets at the gate on June 7 and 8 will be $45.00 per day or $85.00 for both days.
