Vijay Iyer recently recorded his first album for ECM at New York’s Avatar Studio, with Manfred Eicher producing. While Iyer has been recognized predominantly for his fresh approaches to jazz, ECM now proposes to document a broader scope of his work, which will highlight his compositions and multi-media pieces, as well as improvisation.

The first collaboration, Mutations is scheduled for release March 4, 2014. The recording features solo piano pieces and “Mutations I-X”, a suite in ten movements for string quartet, piano and laptop, with Miranda Cuckson and Michi Wiancko, violins, Kyle Armbrust, viola, and Kivie Cahn-Lipman, cello and with composer Iyer playing the piano and contributing electronics and sound-processing.

Iyer previously appeared on ECM with Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory on Far Side, recorded in 2007, on which he plays alongside fellow pianist Craig Taborn. An Iyer/Taborn duo project is amongst future plans, and ECM will also record the Vijay Iyer Trio, as well as Iyer’s compositions for large and small instrumental forces.

Vijay Iyer: “I've listened to recordings on ECM since I was a teenager, and in recent years have avidly followed the label's contemporary classical and chamber music releases and the latest projects by my peers. It's a thrill to join the ECM ranks, especially for the chance to present aspects of my work that most listeners have not yet heard." One of the most highly-regarded artists of his generation, Vijay Iyer has received numerous awards for his work, including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in September 2013.
