Joe Rosenberg

Soprano saxophonist and composer Joe Rosenberg is a unique and compelling voice in today’s jazz. A 1995 recipient of a Jazz Performance Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Joe has studied with the legendary Joe Viola, Buddy Collette and clarinetist John Carter. He has performed with internationally known artists such as Dewey Redman, Gary Foster, Buddy Collette, Junko Inishi, Misha Mengleberg, Mark Helias, Tom Rainey, Jean-Luc Guionnet and Edward Perraud.

He make as a leader he is making "Joe Rosenberg Quartet East" with a recording titled "Version Two" with Indonesian musicians Sri Aksan Sjuman “Strongly written themes which seem to encapsulate much of what has gone on in jazz post- Parker…Tense, urgent and always immediate… a very distinctive approach to soloing” - Cook and Morton from the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD This record was mastered by renowned mastering engineer Scott Hull, who has done all the recent Tzadik releases… In June of 2004, the Joe Rosenberg Quartet East recorded for the first time at the studio in Sai Kung. This session yielded a remarkable one-take, hour-long suite of Joe’s compositions. Joe Rosenberg, Masako Hamamura, Aksan Sjuman and Peter Scherr.

Black Saint artist Joe Rosenberg has made Asia his home for many years, but his musical “homes” have been far away…. Joe has been recording for many years with a great Parisian unit centered on percussionist Edward Perraud as well as performing with distinguished artists in New York and San Francisco.

However, Joe has long felt the need for a group closer to his home in Bali. Drawing on his musical experiences around the region, he has finally found a way to cast his music with players that share his vision for exploratory improvisation. The group has been very active in the last two years, playing to enthusiastic crowds at Universities and jazz festivals in the Asia region.

Residing in Kobe, Masako Hamamura was the logical choice for piano. Witness this recording: Masako plays at once with inventive authority and a flair for group interaction. Peter Scherr, a long time colleague from Hong Kong, lends his sure-footed and swinging bass lines with an uncanny feel for the twists and turns of Joe’s music.

Sri Aksan Sjuman (percussion), one of the stars of Indonesia’s music scene was the perfect link for this group. New Release! Version Two is now available on 1Hr. music. This release documents an extraordinary 1-take recording session in June 2004
