In 1999, Travis Sullivans debut album As We Speak was hailed by critics as ...simply one of the the best indie releases heard in the past year... (Todd Jenkins, All About Jazz), and Sullivan was praised by jazz writer Bill Milkowski (Jazz Times) as ...a promising new talent on the scene. Since then, Sullivan has established himself as a notable contributor to the New York City jazz scene as a composer, arranger, alto saxophonist and pianist. After premiering at New York Citys Knitting Factory in September of 2004, Travis Sullivans latest project The Bjorkestra has received a tremendous response from both fans and the press alike. The 18-piece band performs the music of Islandic pop artist Bjork as arranged and conducted by Sullivan. Travis has been interviewed by such major publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post, and The Boston Globe described the project as being the hippest of the NYC downtown jazz scene. Sullivans interview regarding jazz music and the genres link to Bjork was recently heard by two million listeners on the BBC radio show The World. Sullivans appearances as a bandleader include The Williamsburg Jazz Festival, several prominent New York City performance venues such as Symphony Space and Joes Pub, and a performance with Grammy nominated tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin at NYUs Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Sullivan also performed with Verve recording artist Kurt Rosenwinkel at the 2005 JVC Jazz Festival, which featured some of todays most distinguished modern jazz artists. During his career, Travis has performed and or recorded with Clark Terry, Joe Williams, The New York Voices, and can also be heard on The Sean Nowell Quintets upcoming release, Firewerks. Also an accomplished composer, Sullivans work Last Tango in NYC, a piece for accordion, clarinet, trombone, and electric guitar, was recorded by the eclectic chamber quartet The Four Bags for their 2004 CD Offshore.
