“Circle5” by Boi Akih
From
Circles in a Square Society (Bromo) by Boi Akih
About
Circles in a Square Society, Boi Akih’s new album, takes full advantage of the diversity and personal sound of the musicians. Vocalist Monica Akihary and guitarist Niels Brouwer are joined by the creative trombonist Wolter Wierbos and drummer Kim Weemhoff. They inventively give their own musical and textual twist to songs from such musicians as Jimi Hendrix, David Crosby, Bob Marley, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.
Five originals penned by guitarist Niels Brouwer illustrate Boi Akih's greatest stylistic innovations, exploring strikingly different soundscapes and textures. The media has been full of praise for their concerts and the new album.
The Norwegian Jazznytt wrote: it is the 'Standards' that are really exceptional. When... Akihary can be heard-clear and pure, it is simply superb. Crosby's Guinevere is even more trance inducing than the original, and Marley's Redemption Song is poignantly beautiful. Wolter Wierbos lets his trombone sing in accompanying solos that are perfectly attuned to every sentence' says Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.
