“Kansas City Blues” by Joe Williams with Ben Webster
From
Havin' A Good Time (Hyena Records) by Joe Williams with Ben Webster
About
Released for the first time ever, Havin A Good Time, is a
live concert recording of Joe Williams in 1962 in a rare
performance with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. It was a snowy
winter night at a small club in Providence, Rhode Island, when Joe
Williams, having recently departed his regular gig with the Count
Basie Big Band, hit the stage with a very special guest in tow.
Together with Joes regular quartet, featuring Junior Mance on
piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, they
proceeded to warm the audiences soul with over 60 minutes of pure
jazz magic. The group ran through a set that included Kansas City
Blues, Honeysuckle Rose and Aint Miss Behavin with Ben
Websters big, gorgeous tenor saxophone making each number sparkle
like a diamond. The release of this previously unheard club
recording is a rare find and yet another jewel to add to American
jazz musics illustrious history. Jazz folks everywhere are
ecstatic about this one of a kind document.
