“October” by Quinsin Nachoff
From
Magic Numbers (Songlines Recordings) by Quinsin Nachoff
About
"October" is an original composition from Quinsin Nachoff's Magic
Numbers hybrid SACD. Nachoff is a Toronto-based tenor and
soprano saxophonist and his lyrical playing is the
focus of this meeting of jazz and classical music. Nachoff combines
into a single aesthetic
the sax trio's tradition of freewheeling improvisation and the
elegance and discipline of a
classical string quartet. His complex yet tuneful compositions
reference Astor Piazzolla,
Maria Schneider, Berg, Stravinsky and other 20th century composers,
projecting varied
moods, from romantic and intense to meditative to playful. Much of
the music has a
rockish timefeel, artfully elaborated by Jim Black on drums and Mark
Helias on bass;
Montreal's Nathalie Bonin is the first violinist. Recorded in
Toronto, January of 2004.
