Thomas Chapin
Thomas Chapin was a much loved multi-reed instrumentalist and composer who died of leukemia in 1998. Thomas began making serious collage art in the mid-80s. He was self-taught and inspired by artists like Joseph Cornell, and his own brother, Ted Chapin, an architect and collage artist. Thomas used store-bought tissue and wrapping paper, found paper and paper objects, cut-outs from magazine, rubber stamps, crayon and paint. The eight collages shown here were created in 1997, the year of his illness.
