Matthew Sumera's writings have appeard in One Final Note, Modern Drummer, and Trouser Press.

I perform and write about jazz and improvisational music. I am primarily interested in post bop experimentations, specifically located within transnational contexts and encompassing the genres of free jazz, free improv, electronic, aleatory, and experimental music. I'm also interested in the broader circulations of these musics within the popular unpopular (including post-rock, punk, Noise, death metal, industrial, hip hop, etc.) and how musicians, critics, and audiences think through these kinds of musical border crossings. In addition to my journalism work, I'm a Ph.D. candidate in ethnomusicology working on the above as well as topics including music and war, the legacy of punk, American murder ballads, and gender and music.
