I'm a peripatetic journalist and photographer for national and global publications and websites, specializing in jazz, travel and food.
I've written for print and/or web for All About Jazz, Jazz Times, Mississippi Rag, American Rag, Jazz News, Jazz Report, World Jazz Exchange, AZ Food&Lifestyles, and JJA's Jazz Notes.
I have been writing about Paris and European jazz scenes since 1995, and since 1997 have lived in Paris during the summer.
Previously I was on the staffs of Phoenix-area newspapers and magazines: entertainment-restaurant columnist for Phoenix Rising magazine (1997-99), Arizona Republic food editor (1989-95) and arts-entertainment writer (1995-97), entertainment columnist-restaurant critic for Phoenix Magazine (1986-89), and features-food-entertainment writer/editor for Mesa Tribune (1979-86) and Scottsdale Progress (1972-79). I wrote a weekly jazz column for two daily newspapers for 17 years, and delivered a 5-minute twice-weekly local-jazz update for two Phoenix radio stations for several years.
A published author (”Scottsdale: Jewel in the Desert”, 1984/1988, Windsor Publications, Northridge, CA), I also have contributed to jazz encyclopedias and TIME-LIFE books. I taught writing courses as an adjunct faculty member at Arizona State University, and was a correspondent for TIME magazine.
I've written liner notes for Houston Person-Ron Carter's Dialogues; Keith Greko's My Life, My Music and Two-Burner Hot Plate; Nancy Gee's Dedication and Gaynel Hodge�s What Is This Thing Called Jazz? I've produced five jazz albums: two for vocalist Margo Reed (Margo and Margo: Live!), A Little Taste for trumpeter-pianist-vocalist Nadine Jansen and The Very Best of Nadine Jansen (a retrospective memorial-tribute in 2009), and Jazz in AZ Compilation: Celebrating 30 Years of Great Music!, a double-CD of Arizona musicians from the 1970s through the 21st century. I've produced a number of jazz series and festivals, and produced Bud Shank/David Friesen in concert, and a daylong festival in honor of Ike Cole, a younger brother of Nat King Cole.
I'm a founding member and past president of Jazz In Arizona Inc. (Jazz In AZ), producing concerts and festivals since its inception in 1977. (The metro-Phoenix area has a live-jazz scene of 50-some jazz venues and more than 50 concerts per month, plus a dozen all-blues venues.)
After earning a liberal arts degree at the University of Akron (Ohio), I attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University on a graduate fellowship. My first newspaper job, while a college student, was part-time sports writer and “cop-shop” reporter (police beat) for The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
