Born at an early age, I grew up in the countryside around Loch Lomond in Scotland - yes THAT Loch Lomond. The one that has the bonnie bonnie banks. At primary school, I took up descant recorder, to avoid the school choir, and on arriving at secondary school, had a flute thrust into my hand. At 14, I acquired a 1937 Buescher Aristocrat Alto Sax, and that became the favoured instrument.

Leaving school to start my apprenticeship as a Chartered Accountant, I realised that the music and the studies were not going to go together, and regretfully the instruments were packed away, except for the odd session with some friends.

After qualifying, I eventually ended up in London, by way of Liberia in West Africa, (where I picked up a dirt cheap Yamaha Tenor), The Isle of Lewis, and Aberdeen in Scotland.

Musically, I started with Rock and Roll and Rhythm & Blues (the real stuff), 60s pop and Scottish folk music. The odd Jazz album started sneaking in from 16 on, and I also started getting a taste for Classical music, which I never had at school, despite having to play it on Flute.

Now living in London, I can indulge in as much Jazz as I want. London has a thriving scene around the pubs and clubs.
