Why would you think a Tuba or Sousaphone is not a "conventional bass instrument?" They have been in use for at least 180 years in that role, and were (and are) a vital part of jazz instrumentation. Matt Perrine is a wizard on his horn, but there are quite a few other fine Jazz Tubists that might take exception to your comment.
