Listen to Art's track on Kenton's THIS IS A ORCHESTRA! Capitol Records (I think) from back in the day. I knew Art to say hello to--always seemed a nice cat. Knew his way around the clarinet too. Mort

Nice piece, Skip...Frank Morgan spent those years in San Quentin, too...what an alto section!

Great tribute to Art. He was the first alto player after Bird I heard. He played different than anyone else and inspired me to play alto sax.

He was a true Living Legend. The only part of your article that is incorrect, is that Synanom was located In Southern California, in Santa Monica. The bakery he worked at was in Venice, California which was a couple of blocks from Synanom.

I've never understood why his late period recordings don't seem to get the respect and acclaim of his early stuff. For me, his late period had so much more soul than his earlier recordings.
