I can let you know why "a number of blue-chip big bands have come out of Colorado in the last few years." Between the Univ. of Denver at the south end and Univ. of Northern Colorado - Greeley to the north there are six universities that have jazz studies programs. Almost all the players, composers, arrangers, conductors, producers, and engineers that make these great big band albums are graduates of and/or teach at these institutions.
The reason there is so much great music in Colorado is because institutions of higher learning have supported jazz studies programs for several decades. Let's hope that continues.
