As a student-musician, it was inspiring to read Mr. Robinson's appreciation for scholarship in conjunction with musicianship - his study of Philosophy as well as Music as an undergrad, for instance. It's too bad I hadn't read this article, or one with a similar message, in high school or I may have pursued that study as well, because I agree and don't think that many (if any at all) music departments in the country are forums for the "higher discussions" of music, beyond theory and practice.
