I first hear Rich Matteson in 1978 at a (GMEA) High School Jazz Clinic at the Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA. He was the guest conductor/performer of the Georgia College Jazz Ensemble and was simply amazing. His rendition of "The Shadow of Your Smile" is the best I have ever heard, bar none. How did he hit those notes, and play those scales so flawlessly? He played about twenty awesome songs, and I don't think he missed a note all night (played the piano, too). It continues to remain locked in my head that his Euphonium performance was the most beautiful sound I have ever heard.
