Enjoyed your article ( and the author's photo) very much. Moons ago, while a young guy stationed at Itazuki Air Base, near Fukuoka, Japan, I was befriended by the bandleader of our NCO Club, which I frequented nightly. Before I left for the states, he told me to keep my eyes open for this brilliant young jazz pianist who had just left, I beleive he said for Boston. Of course I forgot about his remark for several years, but stumbled across Toshiko's tapes later and became a great fan. Not all that thrilled with her big band material, but man, her group stuff is imprinted upon my brain. Thanks again for the informative piece.
