I had the opportunity of hearing Pete perform when he was only 8 years old with the Kenton band in Bloomington, Indiana. At the time the young phenom came off as impressive. He came back to Bloomington ten years later and studied at IU. At the time, he was part of a triad of drummers that included John Von Ohlen, and Jeff Hamilton. Add to this group the likes of Randy Brecker, Randy Sandke, and Dave Lahm and John Clayton. Things were at a peak level for jazz in those days in the mid-to late '60's.
Pete Erskine is under appreciated for his expertise. I think he and Jeff Hamilton are the last of a breed who cut their eye teeth with big bands.
