Chico Hamilton was the first drummer to play in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet in 1955. His brush style on the tune, "Soft Shoe," knocked me out and I played it a hundred times trying to copy his style. He probably set the style to an extent for the other drummers who followed him in that quartet. Although West Coast drummers had to stay in the background compared to other jazz styles, that was their charm. Soft but swinging. And Chico was great at bass drum independence playing bass drum accents off the beat.
