"Metheny and Mehldau might've been more successful had they relegated all the duets to one album and all the quartet cuts to its successor."

That's been my impression, too. In addition to that my expectations with regard to the quartet have been disappointed. Ring of Life had made the strongest impression on me when listening to Metheny Mehldau especially due to Jeff Ballard's outstanding drumming. For me it's still the best quartet title of both albums.
