This is an excellent profile of the "King of the Hard Hands"
as he was known in the salsa world.
His funeral in Puerto Rico was held in the historic section of Old San Juan, and it turned out to be quite an event. Was front page news in the local papers, and received extensive television coverage. His body was laid in formal state at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, then there was a funeral procession through the streets, where there was a stage set up with his congas at either side of his casket. There was a line of conga players each playing a few beats in homage. Many of his former bandmates joined in a rousing rendition of his signature tunes. There were alot of tears, but there was much more music.
Hey Ray : QUE VIVA LA MUSICA !!
