Daniel Lanois: My Music for Billy Bob

Read "Daniel Lanois: My Music for Billy Bob" reviewed by

Translating guitarist/producer Daniel Lanois' evocative guitar and ability to create stratified soundscapes into soundtrack music for actor Billy Bob Thornton's directorial debut Sling Blade may seem an unusual choice, but the outcome turns into an interesting and unique blend of his darker, moodier incidental guitar and a variety of other instrumental touches. Lanois' music has always been about mood and ambience and other people have benefited from his unusual gift of capturing or creating all kinds of ambiences. This multitalented musician, thinker and a driving force behind the creation of many great records is a creator of sonic witchcraft. His ...

Daniel Lanois Acadie Goldtop Edition Red Floor Records 2008

Although Daniel Lanois' production and engineering wizardry have secured his place in the musical hall of fame, his own debut album Acadie (Warner Bros., 1989) revealed another talent--songwriting. The album is about as perfect a debut as an artist could hope for, containing every single aspect of what makes Lanois so special, presenting him as both a fertile author and a gifted musician.

In the late 1980s, Lanois moved to New Orleans, where he bought a house that he eventually turned ...

Daniel Lanois Here Is What Is Red Floor Records 2008

Sharing the Process: The Film

Daniel Lanois' film, Here Is What Is, is one of those miraculous movies, a picture that seems to have come together by laws unto itself. It merely exists, like some inexplicable and wonderful quirk of nature. In an era whose artistic expression has come to be dominated by the stultifying forces of financial and strict mass appeal conservatism, Daniel Lanois reminds us to keep our options open. Envisioned and executed as a travelogue rather than ...

Daniel Lanois: Belladonna

Read "Belladonna" reviewed by

Daniel Lanois is doing something truly different in the world of music. His style doesn't really fit in with any genre that can be found at the local music store. Some may call it cosmic, folk, ambient, rock, spiritual, or soul... but the truth is that it is a combination of all these things. He's been heralded as one of the most brilliant producers around, and many musicians have benefited from the alchemic presence of this studio wizard and sonic explorer. Belladonna is Lanois' latest solo effort, but unlike Shine (or Rockets), he delivers a full instrumental ...

Daniel Lanois: Rockets

Read "Rockets" reviewed by

It might seem scary when producer/multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois hands over his CV to someone. One can imagine the look on the person's face upon seeing the variety of artists Lanois has worked with. One cannot but notice that Lanois either alone, or in joint effort with Eno, has changed the direction of modern music several times, by producing some of the most relevant artists of the '80s, '90s, and the new millennium. Somehow he has always been capable of inspiring those artists to shine by helping them reach spiritual depths that they are unable to reach by themselves.
