Music With A View: A Time For Love
ByConcord
2003
Compiled from After Hours, Secret Heart, Ballads And Blues, Standards Of Excellence, Sabia, I Waited For You, The Shining Sea, La Familia, Lazy Afternoon, and Polarity, this program of intimate gems includes four “camera angles,” which portray different visual aspects of intimacy – the scenes and places where we should be when sharing the company of a lover.
You can switch casually between “camera angles” during play. Each visual accompaniment is intended to envelop you with a calming spirit. Lit candles provide a mood – the kind that’s been around for centuries and too often escapes us. Up-close views of a fireplace provide warmth. “Angle three’s” reflection of the moon on calm waters will always put one into the right mood, while “angle four” provides complete artist, album and recording information for the track that’s playing.
Concord features small ensemble, intimate nightclub settings for this themed album. The program includes Scott Hamilton’s lush tenor ballad, the vocal stylings of Curtis Stigers, Marry Stallings and Susannah McCorkle, the fluid teamwork of Hank Jones and Ken Peplowski, a lyrical guitar duet by Joe Beck & Jimmy Bruno, and the eight-piece Latin Jazz band of Poncho Sanchez on “A Time For Love,” with guest alto saxophonist Gary Foster interpreting the featured solo. If you haven’t heard Curtis Stigers yet, “My Foolish Heart” is an excellent example of the romantic spirit that he exudes when performing. Al Cohn’s 1983 recording of “Embraceable You” teams him with a trio led by guitarist Herb Ellis. In veteran hands, the romantic ballad wears well. McCorkle’s Portuguese language rendering of “Manha de Carnaval” teams her with guitarist Emily Remler and saxophonist Scott Hamilton in a heart-wrenching, teary-eyed token of joy and happiness. Cal Tjader’s 1981 recording of “Don’t Look Back” says it all. We owe it to ourselves to take time out for intimate moments like this one, without looking back or thinking about what might have been.
