I'm In Love with a Girl
Doug Ferony | Ferony Enterprises

I'm in Love with a Girl is the third album for Doug Ferony where he continues his determined effort to bring fresh renderings of the great standards to public notice. This time around he has thrown in some captivating originals, including the title tune which appeared on the soundtrack of the film, Mr. Vincent. Also unlike his previous release, where he was joined by Dena DeRose on piano, Ferony has enlisted the services of the Clark Gault Big Band to work with for most of the cuts. Unfortunately, the names of these fine musicians are not included in the liner notes except for soloists. Those getting front and center attention are Gault on trombone, Gary Pack on trumpet and Tim Ries on alto sax. Pack provides an especially telling performance on "It Had to be You" as does Ries on the "The Very Thought of You".

The play list has a nice mix of ballads and up tempo material, all delivered by Ferony in an extremely pleasing and listenable crooner like baritone. One of the fun tunes on the program is "Kansas City" where he's backed by a couple of back up vocalists which brings back memories of some of the tunes from the 1950's with the backups inserting squeals along the way. But Ferony stirs memories of those male masters of the pop tune so sorely missed, viz., Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes and Bobby Darin. It's a pleasure to listen to a singer who gets by with simply working the material without feeling he has to muddle matters with the patina of what passes for hip these days. This is an album loaded with enduring tunes with engaging arrangements performed by a singer who knows what to do with them. Recommended.
