Trummerflora: No Stars Please
Trummerflora No Stars Please Accretions No one can accuse this San Diego experimental collective of lacking a sense of openness. Indeed, the free improvisations of this group on this double-CD veer off in so many directions as to be non-idiomatic. Taken from live shows in San Diego, San Francisco, Carmel Valley and KPBS, these recordings are filtered through the diverse backgrounds of this septet in progressive rock, free jazz, electronic and world music and modern classical. The nine lengthy pieces are mainly allusive, dropping hints of any of these genres and providing sonic guideposts without dwelling on them for any length. In fact, much of the delight of this CD is the gradual metamorphoses of each piece and where the tangents and transitions take them. Special guests George Lewis (trombone), Le Quan Ninh (percussion) and Mike Kennally (guitar) sit in on the barely recognizable, industrial strength cacophony of the seasonal chestnuts, "Frosty the Snowman/Silent Night". But in the end, the bold playing and spontaneous sounds on this CD demonstrate the multiplicity of talent in this west coast city. Track Listing: From The Waste Up, Nonet 1, Nonet 2, Nonet 3, Where's The Entrance, Frosty The Snowman/Silent Night, Third Time, Punch Press Pull, The Break Invasion Personnel: Marcos Fernandes (Percussion), Hans Fjellestad (Keyboards/Electronics), Damon Holzborn (Guitar/Electronics), Nathan Hubbard (Percussion), Robert Montoya (Percussion/Sampler), Marcelo Radulovich (Bass/Electronics), Jason Robinson (Woodwinds), Ellen Weller (Woodwinds). Special Guests: Mike Kenally (Guitar), George Lewis (Trombone), Le Quan Ninh (Percussion).
