Representing one of a few welcome musical surprises for 2001, the Austin, Texas-based “BlueNoiseBand,” conveys a distinctive identity throughout, as this outfit bridges the gap between, power-rock, free jazz, klezmer and more. With the opener “Austria,” the quartet renders a 2-step waltz motif, followed by an audacious mid-tempo swing groove, featuring saxophonist David Lobel’s wily, multi-tracked free-jazz style motifs, and the band’s crashing cadenzas. Highlights continue on “v 2.5” where, Tom Benton’s booming bass lines and drummer Jeremy Bruch’s solid rock beats, set the stage for an ensuing “King Crimson”-like prog rock escapade, brimming with odd-metered time signatures, and a climactically driven solo by electric guitarist, Adrian Quesada.

The musicians’ sustain interest throughout, whether pursuing rumbling ostinato bass and drums rhythmic movements, deviously delectable power rock type fare or when exhibiting their Texas roots thanks to Quesada’s lovely pedal steel work on the C&W tinged, “For Willard.” Overall, this outfit exudes gobs of power and energy amid a potpourri of highly energized and thoroughly stylized pieces that offer the listener an opportunity to hear a homogenous brew, consisting of exhilarating soloing, and well-rehearsed arrangements. Therefore, we sincerely hope that this ensemble’s efforts will not go unnoticed! Recommended.
