Clive Powell aka Georgie Fame takes us back to the future with a CD that features three tunes of the legendary Pianist/Composer Tadd Dameron: "On A Misty Night", "That's The Way It Goes" and "Accentuate The Bass." Fame has set lyrics to these Dameron classics well as a salute to King Pleasure with a fine rendition of "Symphony Sid." Georgie Fame's voice is surely attuned to the jazz idiom despite his occasional forays into other forms of music, although he did tour Europe with Basie in the 60's. Fame has a swinging quality to his vocals on the jump tunes and a ballad style that is tender and compelling. Bobby Troup's "Girl Talk" is hipness personified the melody has always been lovely and Ben Sidran's clever lyrics just add to it. Sidran ably joins Fame in the vocal. With Bob Malach's Jacquet like tenor work, David Hazeltine at the Piano, Louis Hayes on Drums and Peter Washington, Bass, you have a first class ensemble. This recording is well worth a listen.
