CD/LP/Track Review

Iva Ambush: Torch Songs

Recorded from a live performance at Amherst College Iva Ambush and group run through a short play list of five standards. Despite the implication of the album's title, Torch Songs, not all of them are, e.g. "The Frim Fram Sauce" and "My Favorite Things". With no liner notes, it's hard to tell what the singer had in mind with the album title. Nonetheless, Ambush does well with the little there is on the agenda. Whimsical with "Skylark", upbeat , enthusiastic with "The Frim Fram Sauce", poignant with "Lover Man" and hopeful on" Please Send Me Someone to Love". She has good support from a solid set of local musicians. There's an outstanding bass solo by Wes Biles on "Skylark". Scot Ambush who has worked with Spyra Gyra, shows up with his bass on the last track.

With just 28 minutes of music, this album is far too shirt to reach final judgment on Ambush's capabilities. Hopefully just an appetizer of a fuller course of music for a future album.
