A Fireside Chat with Kenny Barron

By Published: November 14, 2003

FJ: What are the subtle differences between accompanying a singer and an instrumentalist?

KB: With a vocalist, you have to, well, accompanying anybody, you don't want to get in the way, but it is even more important with a vocalist, to try not to get in the vocalist's way and to really lay out a carpet, in terms of comping and voicing and things like that. There is an art to it. I like playing with a vocalist.
