Paul Nelson: Look
Remember this name Paul Nelson - if you are not already familiar with Paul's music you soon will be!! This guy can play, really play. You may remember him from his recording days with Liege Lord as their lead guitarist extraordinaire or from dates as a hired gun with dozens of national acts or featured in endorsement ads for Randall Amps, and recent Ernie Ball products. Nelson who studied with guitar great - Steve Vai, in their Berkley day's as well as being a protege of jazz fusion great - Steve Khan has created a tour de force in this his new, all-instrumental fusion release, entitled "LOOK" on LPRecords. This CD exudes boundless energy, and displays ferocious solo sections at the same time showing us his control over an emotional side of playing all the while holding it together with a tasteful melodic sense which comes through on each cut. The first track "Diagonal Blue" is a fusion piece that is funky with impressive instrumentation the piano & bass can clearly heard behind Nelson's energetic guitar work. "Complicated" sounds almost like a new age tune before the guitar gets snappy, funking things up. The audio dimensions are wide open on this one, with the bass and drums setting up an arena for Nelson to rip it up."Rocking Chair" has almost a humorous, slow vibe with slide guitar and country western tone followed by a hard rhythm section that slams in giving the song teeth. Nelson gives it to us with "Full Blast" as his guitar is pushed into overdrive. The song features flawless changes in tempo and mode of attack."Out of Nowhere" the guitar here sounds like a piece of a big band/orchestra as Nelson does a magnificent job constructing a very inspirational song. You don´t have to be a musician to appreciate release, and every time you listen to it you can be sure to discover something new. This is an album that gets to you the first time you hear it, and then keeps growing until it gets stuck in your CD player. ... A very diverse package that takes the listener on a sophisticated journey through the musical mind of Paul Nelson. If you are a fan of Steve Vai and Jeff Beck's guitar stylings you will most definitely love this CD!!! The last words as quoted by Guitar World Magazine's Greg DeBenedetto might just say it all "Chops Deluxe"...
