Dave Douglas: High Risk
Anzitutto gli strumenti: le note di tromba sono le uniche onde non sintetiche che si ascoltano negli oltre 40 minuti di album. Il resto dell'ambiente è sintetico, fatta eccezione per alcune batterie suonate da Mark Guiliana e alcune linee di basso di Jonathan Maron, mentre gran parte del materiale elettronico, vero secondo elemento fondate del progetto, viene affidato alle mani di Shigheto.
Qui la prima sorpresa: Douglas non concede troppo a derive sonore da decifrare, mantenendo l'intera opera assicurata a una melodia che rende High Risk un CD molto differente da alcune anarchiche sperimentazioni che capita di ascoltare, per altro spesso con ottimi risultati.
High Risk è piuttosto un album in equilibrio fra ambientazioni al rallentatore, molto di frequente rarefatte, e linee soliste cantabilissime, quasi classiche verrebbe da dire. Douglas è comunque protagonista assoluto di un progetto che, per quanto presentato nell'ottica di una vera e propria band, addensa l'attenzione proprio attorno allo strumento del leader e nell'improvvisazione trova e ribadisce (anche nelle illuminanti note del booklet) la stella polare indiscussa.
