Kenny Wheeler: Songs for Quintet
I brani recano tutti la firma del trombettista (in realtà qui esclusivamente flicornista, come gli capitava regolarmente, negli ultimi anni) e, con essa, le stimmate della sua poetica, mossa attorno a un canto assorto e solenne, prezioso e pudico, olimpico eppure luminoso, fresco, definitivo.
Il gruppo riunito per l'occasione attraversa i temi senza particolari salti in avanti (Wheeler ha toccato, nel corso dei decenni, terreni ben più accidentati) ma con estrema precisione e puntualità, muovendosi compatto—pur nel rispetto delle singole individualità—con esiti degni di nota specie in "The Long Waiting," a lungo in quartetto senza sax tenore (e, per contro, con la chitarra più centrale che mai), fino a guadagnare una docile danzabilità finale, "Canter No. 1," felicemente aperto dal solo contrabbasso e poi via via sempre più scattante sotto i colpi del tenore, "Sly Eyes," ancora con quella serpeggiante danzabilità, sempre in elegante souplesse, "1076," più libero e nervoso, e "Pretty Liddle Waltz," dove l'additata luminosità melodica tocca forse il suo apice.
La speranza è che dallo scrigno di questo o quello possano uscire d'ora in avanti nuove gemme, a illustrare nel suo complesso una parabola artistica assolutamente esemplare per rigore, longevità e coerenza poetica.
