The Philadelphia jazz scene goes from the majesty of the Kimmel Center with Danilo Perez to the friendly Chris' Cafe with the Jon Gordon Quartet to the sophisticated setting of Zanzibar Blue with Phoebe Snow and that 's just part of it.

KIMMEL CENTER starts off Sept. 29 what it calls the “Dreaming of Dizzy” series with world renowned jazz pianist-composer Danilo Perez and his trio. This will be followed (through the next year) with several presentations by others but curated by Perez who will close out the series on May 8. Perez worked with jazz icon Dizzy Gillespie for three years starting in 1989 during which he was acclaimed as a master of post, bop Latin style jazz. Perez made several jazz albums as leader in addition to playing with the the Panamanian Symphony Orchestra. The three-time Grammy winner was born in Panama has worked with Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes and Steve Lacey. He started at three. he told Metro of fond memories of Philadelphia playing with Slide Hampton and of the great “jam place” Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus.

CHRIS' JAZZ CAFE Oct. 4 brings in the Jon Gordon Quartet with esteemed pianist Bill Charlap. Gordon, alto saxist, at just 30, has worked with Al Grey, Clark Terry and Benny Carter to name a few. He recently recorded the CD Contrasts with Charlap, who worked with the likes of Shirley Horn, Jim Hall and Tony Bennett. Jay Leonhart will be on bass with mark Taylor on drums.

ZANZIBAR BLUE has protean pop/jazz vocalist-song writer Phoebe Snow Oct. 2-3. She can go from gospel to rock, soul, blues, pop and jazz and just does not fit in any one slot for anyone. She has worked with such major diverse stars as Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Al Green and Buddy Miles.

TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Swathmore, has jazz offerings Sunday, served by esteemed long-time local piano man, "Father John" D’Amico and his trio—Kenny Davis, bass and Greg McDonald, drums. D’Amico is also at the William Penn Inn in Gwynedd Thursday-Saturday after some 12 years. A former priest, he has worked seemingly every jazz club in town and has backed up everyone from Lionel Hampton to Etta Jones.
