Bob James: Quartette Humaine
Ventisette anni dopo Double Vision, la coppia David SanbornBob James torna insieme, per la rinata Okeh, con un nuovo album, Quartette Humaine, in cui si affrontano con estrema cura e con accattivante generosità temi altamente orecchiabili e un repertorio musicale cristallino.

Delle nove tracce del disco —nato come omaggio alla musicalità del Dave Brubeck Quartet dei primi anni '50—almeno due, "You Better Not Go to College" di Sanborn e "Follow Me" di James, si rifanno chiaramente al repertorio del pianista scomparso il 5 dicembre del 2012 (una settimana prima dell'inizio delle registrazioni). Il primo richiama anche nel titolo gli album Jazz at the College of the Pacific e Jazz Goes to College, il secondo è invece più ricco di elementi riconducibili al celebre "Blue Rondò à la Turk." Tuttavia, è soprattutto la tendenza a piacere ad un pubblico non solo di jazzofili ad accomunare la coppia Sanborn-James a Dave Brubeck.

Per quanto meno incline di Double Vision a seguire le mode di mercato, Quartette Humaine risente delle frequentazioni dei musicisti col mondo del music business (serial televisivi compresi). Se ne ricava un jazz di tradizione, ben fatto, impeccabile, pulito, melodioso, sicuramente affrancato dal ricercare nuovi scenari, e solo in parte tentato da derive smooth in versione acustica (come nel caso del latineggiante "Montezuma" e del funk/R&B "Deep in the Weeds").

Agli strazanti (acuti) quanto rassicuranti suoni dei sassofoni di Sanborn si susseguono, placide e lineari, le note pianistiche di James, in un programma condiviso di astrazioni cool jazz e di propensione al lirismo. Insieme le "voci" di piano e sax dichiarano egregiamente, in un crescendo di consonanti incastri, il raggiungimento di punte di grande valore in brani sia lenti ("Sofia") sia dall'andamento medio ("Another Time, Another Place" e "Genevieve"). Inoltre, la sezione ritmica, affidata a James Genus e Steve Gadd, è un meccanismo perfetto, stabilizzato sulla stessa frequenza dei leader.

Esempio notevole di modernismo ancorato alla tradizione, Quartette Humaine non ha niente di meccanico, anche se a tratti l'estrema e impeccabile precisione esecutiva conferisce paradossalmente un leggero carattere di costumanza.
