CD/LP/Track Review
The Lonely Bears: The Lonely Bears
The Lonely Bears recorded three albums in the early 90’s, which were never released in the USA. Thankfully, progressive-rock label Magna Carta has reissued the first installment originally released on the “Pelican Sound Recordings” label. Here, superstar drummer Terry Bozzio teams up with British session luminaries, Tony Coe (sax), Tony Hymas (kbrds) and guitarist Hugh Burns with a sound that borders fusion, jazz and world music. Bozzio provides the framework with his now, legendary tom-tom patterns which are often melodic, rhythmically complex, polytonal, not to mention polyrhythmic........All encompassing as some might say.... Mighty fine compositions coupled with thoughtful soloing and cohesive ensemble work make this recording a sheer delight. “The Lonely Bears” are about veteran and highly esteemed session musicians airing it out a notch or two more than most would expect. It’s about unity and a firm sense of “group” direction as the compositions run the gamut from being ethereal, subversive or going for the jugular. A great band, a great record! * * * * * web: www.magnacarta.net/pelican.htm
