Six leading jazz guitarists on one album. It’s a fine tribute to a legend. Tal Farlow’s acute single-note runs and energetic bebop drive distinguished him as one of the premier jazz guitarists of the 1950s. Replacing Mundell Lowe in the Red Norvo Trio and moving on later to Artie Shaw’s Gramercy Five, Farlow helped establish the guitar as an instrument of choice for the bop generation.

With the solo order listed in the album’s liner notes, it’s quite satisfying to appreciate the subtle differences in tone and technique between the guitarists. Working with bass and drums for the most part in pairs, the stellar guitarists have their own way of saying it. Recommended, this hard driving bebop tribute by a few of the best in the field represents an important piece of straight-ahead jazz history.
