CD/LP/Track Review

Kenny Burrell: 12*15*78

A glance at Kenny Burrell's discography reveals that he has recorded at least a half- dozen "live" albums at The Village Vanguard. Obviously, Kenny and his sidemen enjoy the warmth, comfort and intimacy of this fabled New York nightspot. The title of this 2-CD set refers to the date when Burrell originally recorded Live At The Village Vanguard and Kenny Burrell In New York for the Muse label. This attractively packaged reissue captures Burrell's complete 80-minute set in its entirety. Larry Gales (bass) and Sherman Ferguson (drums) join the bluesy guitarist for a relaxed program of bop standards, classic chestnuts and a touch of Ellingtonia. Kenny plays in his typically warm and sensitive manner and he allows his sidemen plenty of room to stretch out. As is the case with most jazz musicians, the trio seems inspired by the "live" setting and they attack the repertoire with the kind of gusto studio dates often lack. Solid. ***
