Big Band Caravan

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band / Gerald Wilson Orchestra / Knoxville Jazz Orchestra

By Published: August 11, 2011
Whigham, who now co-directs the BBC Jazz Orchestra, is purposeful and persuasive on the standards "I'm Old Fashioned," "Yesterdays" and "Never Let Me Go," Povel much the same on "Waltz for Isobel," "No Need for That" and (with drummer Thomas Sauerborn) the venerable flag-waver, "Sweet Georgia Brown." Wessels shines brightly on "October Ballad," "I'll Be Seeing You" and (with alto Philipp Gerschlauer) "Tangerine." Bell, an American who has made her home in the UK and Europe since she was twenty, shows she still has plenty to offer as she nears her seventieth year, impressively nailing "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (and Write Myself a Letter)," My Foolish Heart," "Prelude to a Kiss," "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "My Shining Hour."

Napper's sunlit charts provide a conspicuous level of comfort, while Diefenbach's talented youngsters heighten the mood with spirited blowing throughout. Sauerborn anchors a sturdy rhythm section, and there are sharp solos by Gerschlauer, guitarist Andreas Volk, trombonist Tim Hepburn and tenor Benedikt Koch on "Razzmetazz / me Blues." This is (at least) the fourth album by Landes Jugend, and each one is a paradigm of engaging big-band jazz. In sum, a Tribute that's open-hearted and hard to resist.
