Johanna Grussner: From Scandinavia to NYC... and back again
The morning after harsh economic reality kicked in and Grüssner was forced to disband the orchestra and take the job teaching music at PS86. She had a love/hate relationship with the school, disliking what she saw as a far too regimented approach to education but enjoying her relationships with its street-smart, brittle pupils.
Back in Scandinavia, she looks back on her time in the USA as an almost enchanted period of her life. "I know I made the right decision to move back," she says. "Still, I have to force myself not to think about New York too much because it hurts. I miss that special ambience of Manhattan, I miss the Bronx kids and I miss my friends. I'm so glad I lived there while I was able to."
