Peter Bernstein: Live at Smalls (2010)

By Published: July 31, 2010
Peter Bernstein: Live at Smalls A live recording from an intimate venue—in this case, the well-respected Greenwich Village club, Smalls—is like comfort food.. Live at Smalls, from guitarist Peter Bernstein, doesn't disappoint, starting off with a blues to welcome everyone in, with solid solo turns from all members of the quartet, also including pianist Richard Wyands

Yes, Jimmy Cobb on drums. Not your average, everyday sideman. These performances come from two nights in 2008 (December 17 and 18), but weren't released until 2010 on the Live at Smalls imprint; a fairly new record label with nearly a dozen releases to date.

The recording quality is good, and does a fine job of capturing this very talented quartet in fine form. Bernstein is, as always, exemplary; he is simply one of the finer players around, and this recording serves as a good showcase for his playing, especially considering the very high quality sideman on the gig.

Highly recommend this recording for fans of Bernstein, of Smalls, and for that matter, of live recordings, this one satisfies.
