Marcotulli/Pia De Vito/Tuncboyaci: Triboh

Triboh is a complex ethno-jazz project which shows a great sensibility from each of the three musicians involved. In this record, the harmonic jazz side is fully covered by Rita Marcotulli, the extraordinary 36-year-old pianist from Rome. The dazzling rhythms are courtesy of percussionist Arto Tuncboyaci (better known as part of Marc Johnson's Night Ark). That leaves 32-years-old Neapolitan singer Maria Pia De Vito with the freedom to experiment with her own vocal skill.

With its evocative mood, Triboh is a cross of different approaches to today's jazz scene. It's an audio documentary of a journey where Napoli, repository of many ancient Mediterrean cultures, becomes a musicians' destiny. For example, listen to "Vaccuccia De No Pierseco," a variation based on the 16th century traditional, "Villanella," where Maria De Vito's original Neapolitan lyrics of love and seduction as well as romanticism and irony, show the meaning of this precious journey. The expedition is brought to the final crescendo with Rita Marcotulli's compulsory "Escape."

A beautiful album, not to be missed - especially by those intrigued by the Mediterranean influence on jazz.

Musicians:Rita Marcotulli; Maria Pia De Vito; Arto Tuncboyaci.
