Matana Roberts at the Vortex in London

By Published: April 17, 2009

Towards the close of a fourth piece, Roberts introduced the band over a smoothly accelerating pulse. Her palpable delight at being in London in such a supportive setting translated into a first set of almost 90 minutes. After the interval, they resumed with a spirited reading of "Exchange" from the Chicago Project, with the strong group vibe suggesting that there were more highlights to come. Sadly, I had to leave at this point to catch the last train home, narrowly avoiding a disturbing impasse between demonstrators and police en route. One consolation was that the concert was recorded by BBC Radio 3, so the evening's music, including hopefully the remainder of the second set, from this impressive talent in the ascendant may garner the wider appreciation it deserves.
