It's impossible to do justice to all of the fine new music issued in 2008. So I've listed the eleven discs that had the greatest impact on me. Each one includes the name of the drummer who was essential in making the music special.

Pete Malinverni Invisible Cities
(Reservoir Music)
Tom Melito

Ellis Marsalis Quartet Open Letter to Thelonious
(Elm Music)
Jason Marsalis

Grant Stewart Young At Heart
(Sharp Nine Records)
Joe Farnsworth

Ruslan Khain For Medicinal Purposes Only!
(Smalls Records)
Phil Stewart

Joe Magnarelli Persistence
(Reservoir Music)
Kenny Washington

Eliot Zigmund Breeze
(SteepleChase)
Eliot Zigmund

Pete Zimmer Quartet Chillin' Live @ Jazz Factory
(Tippin' Records)
Pete Zimmer

John Marshall Quintet Live At "Le Pirate"
(Organic Music)
Mark Taylor

Rob Schneiderman Glass Enclosure
(Reservoir Music)
LeRoy Williams

Ralph Lalama Energy Fields
(Mighty Quinn Productions)
Joe Corsello

Gary Smulyan High Noon
(Reservoir Music)
Steve Johns

hallo David, thanks for your list. It helps to find some good music in too many CD releases. But there is one mistake. Behind the name of the drummer of the John Marshall CD you have the wrong person (Mark Taylor, the fr-horn player instead of Mark Taylor, the drummer)

kepp swingin',

Scheffner:

Thanks for posting a comment. I double checked the personnel for the John Marshall recording. The drummer's name is Mark Taylor.

Best,

David O.
