Guitarist Scott Hesse is yet another talented, technically adept young jazz artist looking to make a name for himself on the New York scene. His debut recording, Intuition>, is a solidly swinging effort that shows his affinity for the straight-ahead, Blue Note sound of the '50s and '60s, as well as a more subtle awareness of the jazz avant-garde.
Hesse works through a nicely varied set of six originals and two standards: Joe Henderson's "the Kicker" (which first appeared on the classic Horace Silver album Song for My Father ) and the ballad "I Wish I Knew." He is backed by a fine young quartet of unknowns (to me at least) including Jon Cowherd on piano, Ranaan Meyer on bass, and Dan Weiss on drums.
It is hardly a criticism of the 27-year-old Iowan, now living in the Bronx, to say that he is still searching for an original voice on his instrument. His improvisational style strongly recalls that of standard bearers from Wes Montgomery to Grant Green. But he has a firm mastery of the fundamentals and is off to a good start with this promising debut.
