Robin Eubanks Sextet: 4: JJ/Slide/Curtis and Al

Joel Roberts has been contirbuting to AAJ since its earliest days.The title, if you couldn't figure it out, refers to the trombone legends J.J. Johnson, Slide Hampton, Curtis Fuller and Al Grey. Eubanks proves himself a more than capable heir to their legacy on this highly satisfying album of bop and post-bop. He and a fine band (Mike Cain on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Gene Jackson on drums, Antonio Hart on tenor and alto saxophones) offer six originals inspired by the trombone masters, plus standards by Kurt Weill, Wayne Shorter, and Thad Jones. This is a loose, spirited album that trombone fans and fans of hard-swingin' jazz should enjoy.
Of special note is the first recorded appearance of trumpeter Duane Eubanks, a promising addition to a talented musical family that includes older brothers Robin and Tonight Show guitarist/bandleader/sidekick Kevin.
