Take Five With Lafayette Harris, Jr.
Anecdote from the road: When I was in Brazil in 1985, I got the runs from the food and the water. One time I just had to "go," so I ran off stage in the middle of the show. I could hear the band continue to play upstairs (there were two keyboard players in this band). I could hear my solo coming up in this number as I was finishing up in the john. I got back up to the stage just in time to walk on and play my solo.
Favorite venue: I always like playing at Sweet Basil. Great treatment and great food too.
Your favorite recording in your discography and why? My newest record, In the Middle of the Night.
What do you think is the most important thing you are contributing musically? I really got what I wanted on that record from the sound to the playing of the musicians.
Did you know... That I was incredibly afraid of spiders until I bought my house in Brooklyn in 1997. After seeing a spider in the house I felt, it's OK, that's my spider just like this house is.
How you use the internet to help your career? It's a lot to keep up with. I have to really put forth a lot of energy to keep things updated. My website took me years to get where I wanted it and have the proper control over it. I was with one of those controlled group cluster jazz sites and I didn't dig the conformity.
