CD/LP/Track Review
The Cabildo's Three: Cabildo's Three - Yuxtaposicion
The Cabildo's Three are a bit of a mystery mainly due to the obscurity of the original release and the limited, pigeon English sleeve notes on this Italian re-issue. Originally released in the 70's on the Thuban Six label and recorded in Miami, further details are unclear.
What is clear however is that the trio are very talented musicians - Cabildo on keyboards, Bobby Fares on bass and Max Ronnie on percussion. Not names from the Latin Music Hall of Fame that's for sure but that isn't important, it's the content, not the reputation that counts here.
All 10 tracks are original compositions, written and led by Cabildo who effuses the songs with a warm control alternating between piano and Rhodes.
The compositions vary in tempo from laidback, mellow workouts to dance floor oriented rhythmic shufflers. A common thread seems to be the lazy intro before bursting into very tight bass and percussion all overlaid with Cabildos' beautiful playing. These are not huge, meandering latin tunes a la Cal Tjader but more short and sweet sub four minute mini-masterpieces.
An album that's at home on the dance floor as well as the living room, office or study. If warm, rhythmic latin is your thing then you could do much worse than this album. I doff my cap to the chaps at Schema for having the foresight and good taste to reissue this marvellously obscure release from the 70's.
