CD/LP/Track Review

Doc Anello: It Just Plain Swings!!

The father of Orange County-based jazz guitarist and Cexton Records President John Anello, Jr., veteran saxman/singer Doc Anello isn’t a huge name in jazz but has decades of big-band experience under his belt and has backed Eartha Kitt, Slim Gaillard, Johnny Mathis and quite a few other jazz and pop stars. Doc Anello makes singing his main priority on It Just Plain Swings!!, an enjoyable collection of big band and quintet recordings that lives up to its title. Anello gives the impression that he’s long been an admirer of Mel Torme’s smooth delivery, and he brings a lot of charm and warmth to “Imagination,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Teach Me Tonight” and other time-tested standards.

Again, the title is appropriate— It Just Plain Swings!!.
