Dave Douglas at Zanzibar Blue

Not only has Douglas himself had much interaction with the jazz tradition but he represents the consciousness of a number of musical peers—John Zorn, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Don Byron, Steve Lacy, Fred Hersch, Uri Caine, to name a few—all immersed in jazz tradition yet willing to experiment and innovate. It is always a pleasure to anticipate and then hear what these musicians do to stretch our minds and the scope of our listening. Never resting, they keep jazz alive and expanding. It's a fine reward to go to an established club like Zanzibar Blue and get that feeling of real innovation.
