CD/LP/Track Review
Various Artists: Jazz Fusions 4
Once again those nice Fusion people have put together a set of stunning collection of contemporary and fusion jazz cuts. Included on this 14-track collection is music from Doc Powell, Norman Brown, Quincy Jones, Art Porter, Nelson Rangell and Fourplay to name but a few.
The selections are a wonderful balance of the fresh and new, from the Daryle Chinn's opening version of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fantasy," spoiled only by the rather off key vocals. "Whisk Away" from Tony Gable and 206 is his best offering to date; Doc Powell's "Sunday Morning" features that sultan of smooth sax, Kirk Whalum
The album's stunner is from Quincy's " Duke's Joint " set and features Kirk Whalum and the meltdown voice of Barry White in " The secret garden ".
The album's stunner is from Quincy Jones' Back On The Block, and features Kirk Whalum and the meltdown voice of Barry White in "The Secret Garden." the late Art Porter is featured from his 1996 release "Wishful Thinking"; and the sax ration continues in fine form with the multi-talented Nelson Rangell from his recent GRP outing with guitarist Chuck Loeb.
Other highlights are from Brazilian guitarist, Torcuato Mariano, Bob James and friends from Fourplay and from the much underrated keyboarder Freddie Ravel.
